My father died when I was in class 4. My sister was then in class 8. In this situation the responsibility of the family was now on my mother’s shoulders.

My mother was a housewife. Father had left some land and savings. With these my mother had to raise two daughters with much hardship.

The relatives used to say-” Why don’t you marry them off? It’s not like you have a son to look after you.” But mother went on with her struggle.

The day my sister stood 22nd in medical admission test exam, it was her triumph as much as my sister’s.

My sister used to help me out a lot before my own admission test. I never had to hire a tutor for biology.

What my sister taught when she came on vacation was enough. After hearing my result, I cried for a long time in her arms.

That moment can’t be described. After getting chance I applied to live in my sister’s room.

Though freshers weren’t granted a room this much early, our provost Shahid sir arranged it when he heard that we were sisters.

So I didn’t have to face the hardships of hostel life for a single day. It was like I was back at home. I couldn’t cope with the dorm food at first.

My sister was doing her internship then and cooked for me despite her busy schedules.

If she had duties during night shift, we would go to the restaurants in Chankharpool. We also hung aroung TSC sometimes.

After coming to DMC I realised how much my sister had to sacrifice for me and mother.

She never bought anything that she desired but sent that money to my mother.

On Pahela Baishakh her friends wore red-white sarees. She used to wear simple ones as she thought the cost to be unnecessary.

When her batch went on a tour to Cox’s Bazar, she stayed to save the cash. Moreover she didn’t want to go alone leaving us behind.

For that reason after she got a job she took us to Cox’s Bazar. She sacrificed this much so we could live a little better.

During her internship, many a times she had bought medicine for the patients. If they had shortage of money, she gave the rest out of her own pocket.

Even if she found someone unconscious on the road, she herself rented a vehicle to bring him to the hospital.

I may not have a brother and I’ve lost my father too. But my sister had never let me understand the absence of a father and what she did for me is certainly more than a brother ever could. She had always made my every wish come true.

So I could say that she is at a time my sister, father and brother.

The girl who lost her father at such an early age is now an officer of the Bangladesh Armed Forces and she achieved this feat on her own.

My mother, who has overcome every obstacle till now, can proudly say-”

Let me introduce to you my elder daughter Captain Fatema of Bangladesh Army.
